Ricky Rai, the younger son of deceased underworld don Muthappa Rai, has given his official statement to the Ramanagara police regarding the gun attack on him that took place just past midnight on Friday. Still recovering from bullet wounds, Ricky spoke to a DySP-rank officer at Manipal Hospitals on Old Airport Road on Sunday.
Police sources said Ricky echoed his driver Basavaraj’s FIR, identifying key suspects as Muthappa Rai’s former ally Rakesh Malli, his stepmother Anuradha Rai, realtor Nitish Shetty, and Shetty’s aide Vaidyanathan. Investigators are exploring all angles—ranging from property disagreements to potential vendettas.
Interestingly, Ricky had only one gunman and his driver with him during the ambush—an unusual departure from his usual security detail of three guards. Police are probing why Ricky wasn’t driving himself that night, unlike his regular routine.
As per the driver’s account, Ricky was shot near his Bidadi farmhouse after stepping out briefly and returning. A sniffer dog team and metal detector experts have since scoured the site. Post-attack, Ricky was rushed to a nearby hospital in the same SUV before being shifted to Manipal in an ambulance. That vehicle has now been retrieved for a crime scene reconstruction.
So far, three suspects have been interrogated. The police await the FSL report to determine the weapon used. Meanwhile, Ricky’s lawyer noted that a legal settlement had already been reached through Lok Adalat, hinting that greed, not conflict, may have motivated the attack.
