A speeding water tanker overturned on Gunjur Main Road in Varthur, falling under the Whitefield traffic division, on Monday around 12:45 PM. The driver, Mahalingappa, and his assistant, Kumar, sustained injuries in the incident. Fortunately, the usually congested road had fewer vehicles at the time, avoiding a major disaster.

The incident, captured by a rear dashcam of another vehicle, quickly spread across social media, drawing widespread criticism of reckless driving by water tankers in the city.

According to police, Mahalingappa claimed the accident happened due to brake failure, which caused the tanker to hit the pavement and flip. A senior official said the driver was en route to his home in Munnekolalu for lunch, with the tanker already emptied.

Despite an SUV and another tanker being just ahead of Mahalingappa’s vehicle, no collision occurred. Authorities have taken the driver’s blood samples to determine if alcohol was involved.

Police have filed a case and confirmed that they are actively penalizing water tanker operators who drive negligently. The incident has once again highlighted the dangers posed by unregulated and rashly driven water tankers on Bengaluru’s busy roads
