Traffic in central Bengaluru is set to face major slowdowns as BBMP begins white-topping work on Residency Road, a key artery in the city’s Central Business District (CBD). The 280-metre stretch from Ashirvadam Junction (near St Joseph’s PU College) to Opera Junction (near Brigade Road) is under construction from May 8 to May 31.

The ripple effect of this work is expected to be felt across Residency Road, Richmond Road, St Mark’s Road, Convent Road, Hosur Road, Nanjappa Circle, and Anil Kumble Circle. Commuters are urged to take alternate routes and budget extra time for their travel.

Congestion was already visible over the last weekend, worsened by rainfall, with vehicles crawling for long durations.

The BBMP opted for white-topping due to recurring waterlogging and pothole formation on this TenderSure-developed stretch. Traffic police, anticipating bottlenecks, have released advisories and a diversion plan.

M Lokesh, BBMP’s Chief Engineer (Projects), assured that the work will be completed in 10–15 days, and emphasized deadline compliance. Supporting this, Ashok Nagar traffic inspector Seema VS has intensified work pace by doubling the workforce, increasing cement load deliveries, and ensuring round-the-clock operations.

The decision to execute the project during summer vacation was deliberate, to minimize disruptions to school-going children. Additionally, a BBMP engineer will be on-site at all times as per the approval conditions.

While light rains are forecasted for a few more days, officials don’t expect weather-related delays.
