Bengaluru: A Bengaluru-based chartered accountant’s story of choosing to walk 4 km every day instead of spending ₹60 on an autorickshaw has struck a chord on social media, inspiring discussions about financial discipline, independence and resilience.

Meenal Goel recently shared how, at the age of 22, she earned ₹20,000 a month in her first job. After paying for rent, food and other essential expenses, she was left with savings of only ₹3,000 each month.

While many suggested she simply spend ₹60 on an auto ride, Goel calculated that the daily fare would total ₹1,560 a month over 26 working days—more than half of her monthly savings.

A small saving that meant much more

Rather than reducing her savings, Goel chose to walk 4 km to work every day for three months.

She revealed that her parents were unaware of her decision. According to Goel, they would have readily sent her money had they known about her situation. However, she had made a personal commitment at the age of 20 to become financially independent and not rely on her parents.

For her, the daily walks became more than a way to save money—they represented a promise to herself.

Building resilience through everyday choices

Sharing her experience on social media, Goel said many people questioned why she was putting herself through the hardship when financial help was available.

She explained that every kilometre she walked was helping her build something greater than savings. The experience strengthened her self-reliance, discipline and confidence in overcoming difficult situations.

Goel described the walks as a reminder that she was capable of doing hard things and making sacrifices for long-term goals.

Her story has resonated with thousands online, with many praising her determination and practical approach to managing finances during the early stages of her career.

For young professionals beginning their careers, her journey serves as a reminder that seemingly small decisions can have a lasting impact on both financial stability and personal growth.
