Bengaluru: Compact SUVs continue to dominate Bengaluru’s pre-owned car market, with buyers increasingly favouring them over sedans and hatchbacks due to their practicality, strong resale value and suitability for the city’s road conditions.

According to industry insights, the growing demand is being driven not only by infrastructure challenges but also by buyers’ focus on long-term ownership costs and resale returns.

Bengaluru’s roads favour compact SUVs

Experts say Bengaluru’s uneven roads and frequent monsoon waterlogging make compact SUVs a practical choice. Their higher ground clearance of around 190-200 mm allows them to negotiate potholes, speed breakers and flooded stretches more comfortably than lower-slung sedans.

The segment has also gained popularity among first-time buyers looking for a balance between affordability, comfort and versatility.

Strong resale value boosts demand

Compact SUVs have consistently retained their value better than many sedans in Bengaluru’s used car market. A broader pool of buyers, ranging from young professionals to families, has helped maintain steady demand and shorter resale cycles.

Popular models such as the Hyundai Creta, Maruti Brezza, Tata Nexon and Kia Seltos continue to attract strong interest, although buyers are increasingly prioritising service history, ownership records and vehicle condition over higher-end variants.

Industry observers note that complete service records, fewer previous owners and good maintenance often have a greater influence on resale prices than premium features.

Buyers focus on long-term value

Bengaluru’s tech-savvy buyers are placing greater emphasis on total ownership costs rather than just the purchase price. Factors such as maintenance expenses, fuel efficiency, insurance and resale value are playing a significant role in purchasing decisions.

With remote work and changing mobility needs, compact SUVs are increasingly viewed as practical all-round vehicles for both city commuting and highway travel.

Electric SUVs may reshape the market

Industry experts believe the arrival of more pre-owned electric compact SUVs, including models such as the Tata Nexon EV and MG ZS EV, could gradually reshape the market over the next few years as Bengaluru’s EV charging infrastructure continues to expand.

However, compact SUVs powered by conventional fuel are expected to remain the preferred choice for many buyers in the near future due to their proven reliability, versatility and sustained resale demand.
