Davanagere: A 41-year-old woman was allegedly gangraped by 10 men in Karnataka’s Davanagere district, in a case that has sparked outrage and led to swift police action. Authorities have confirmed that all 10 accused have been arrested and an extensive investigation is underway.

The alleged incident took place on June 3 and came to light after the survivor approached police and lodged a formal complaint at the Basavapattana Police Station.

Survivor alleges assault was recorded

According to the complaint, the woman alleged that the accused not only sexually assaulted her but also recorded the incident on video. Police said the accused are alleged to have later deleted the footage.

Investigators are now examining whether digital evidence can be recovered through forensic analysis. The alleged deletion of the video has become a significant part of the probe and could result in additional charges related to destruction of evidence.

Police launch intensive investigation

Following the complaint, police immediately registered a case and began an investigation. Senior officers visited the scene, with Shekhar HT personally overseeing the initial stages of the probe.

Police said all 10 accused have been taken into custody and are being questioned to establish the sequence of events, the role of each individual, and whether the crime was planned in advance.

Investigators are also examining mobile phones, digital records, and other evidence that may help corroborate the survivor’s statement.

Medical and legal procedures underway

The survivor is currently receiving medical care and support. Authorities are expected to record a detailed statement as part of the ongoing legal proceedings.

Police indicated that forensic evidence, witness testimonies, and digital data recovery efforts will play a crucial role in building the case against the accused.

Growing concern over crimes against women

The incident has renewed concerns about crimes against women in Karnataka and across the country. Women’s rights groups and civil society organisations have repeatedly called for faster investigations, stronger enforcement, and timely prosecution in cases involving sexual violence.

Officials have assured that the investigation will be carried out thoroughly and that appropriate legal action will be taken based on the evidence collected.

Police said further details will be shared as the investigation progresses.
