Bengaluru: A woman in her late twenties has been arrested and remanded to judicial custody for allegedly assaulting a woman home guard following a confrontation over clothing advice in east Bengaluru. The incident, which occurred near KR Puram railway station earlier this month, has sparked debate on social media after a video of the altercation surfaced online.

The accused has been identified as Damini, also known as Mohini, a resident of Narayanapura in the Mahadevapura area. She works with a private firm in the city, police said. The injured home guard, Lakshmi Narasamma, is attached to the Banasawadi traffic police station and was on duty regulating traffic at the time of the incident.

Incident near KR Puram railway station

According to police, the incident took place on the evening of Friday, January 9, in the busy stretch near KR Puram railway station, a high-traffic area that often witnesses congestion during peak hours. Damini was reportedly walking along the road when a group of men allegedly made inappropriate remarks about her attire.

Officials said Narasamma, who was stationed nearby as part of traffic regulation duty, noticed the commotion and intervened. She reportedly drove away the men who were making the remarks, preventing the situation from escalating further at that point.

However, the situation took a different turn shortly after. Police said that during the interaction, the home guard allegedly advised Damini to dress modestly to avoid attracting such comments and also cautioned her against walking on the congested road, citing safety concerns due to traffic.

Argument escalates into assault

Police said these remarks angered Damini, leading to a heated argument between the two women. The confrontation allegedly escalated when Damini turned aggressive and physically assaulted Narasamma.

The assault reportedly resulted in bleeding injuries to the home guard’s face and nose. She was later taken to a private hospital, where she received treatment as an outpatient. Doctors confirmed that while the injuries were not life-threatening, she required immediate medical attention.

Police personnel reached the spot soon after being alerted and detained the accused. A video purportedly showing portions of the altercation later surfaced on social media platforms. However, officials noted that the video could not be independently verified and cautioned against drawing conclusions based solely on short clips circulating online.

Case registered, accused remanded

Based on a complaint lodged by Narasamma, the police registered a case against Damini under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for assaulting a public servant on duty and causing hurt. After preliminary questioning, Damini was formally arrested.

She was produced before a magistrate, who ordered her judicial custody at Bengaluru Central Prison. Police said further investigation is under way, including the examination of CCTV footage from the area and statements from eyewitnesses.

A senior police officer said that any assault on personnel performing public duties would be dealt with strictly. “Home guards and traffic personnel work under challenging conditions. Attacking them while they are on duty is a serious offence,” the officer said.

Statements and background details

During questioning, Damini reportedly told investigators that she had completed part of her schooling in the Maldives and later obtained a Bachelor of Business Management (BBM) degree from a private college in Bengaluru. Police said this information is being verified as part of routine background checks.

Officials also said they are examining the sequence of events carefully, including the circumstances that led to the confrontation and whether any provocation or misunderstanding played a role. However, they emphasised that physical violence cannot be justified under any circumstances.

Wider discussion on safety and conduct

The incident has triggered wider discussions online about women’s safety in public spaces, the role of bystanders, and how authorities and citizens should respond to harassment. While many users condemned the assault on the home guard, others pointed to the need for sensitivity when offering personal advice, especially in emotionally charged situations.

Police reiterated that members of the public should report instances of harassment to authorities and avoid taking the law into their own hands. “Any grievance must be addressed through lawful means,” an official said.

Conclusion

As the investigation continues, the case highlights the complex challenges faced by law enforcement and home guards in maintaining order in crowded urban spaces like Bengaluru. With the accused now in judicial custody, police said they would complete the probe and submit a detailed charge sheet to the court, ensuring that due process is followed and accountability is fixed based on evidence.
