A 70-year-old woman was allegedly murdered by her daughter and grandson after she objected to their alcohol consumption at an apartment in Kengeri, police said on Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as Jayamma. Police have taken her daughter, Bhagyalakshmi (49), and grandson, Kushal (26), into custody in connection with the incident.

Elderly woman allegedly attacked after objection

According to police, the incident occurred on June 22 when Jayamma reportedly confronted the mother-son duo over their drinking habits.

Investigators alleged that the two assaulted her with a cricket bat and a wooden stick, inflicting fatal injuries. When police arrived at the apartment, Jayamma was found lying near the bathroom in the hall.

Neighbours had raised concerns earlier

The case was registered based on a complaint filed by Dhananjay, a resident of the apartment complex.

According to the complaint, Bhagyalakshmi and Kushal had allegedly been consuming alcohol and creating disturbances in the apartment for the past several months, causing inconvenience to other residents.

Concerned neighbours had earlier contacted Kushal’s father, Krishna Naik, and arrangements were reportedly made to send Kushal to a rehabilitation centre.

Frequent quarrels reported

Police said Kushal had returned home a few weeks ago, after which the alleged disturbances resumed.

Jayamma had recently come to stay with the family, and residents reportedly heard frequent arguments from the apartment over the past few days.

On the night of June 21, neighbours allegedly heard loud quarrels and cries for help from the house. Police believe the fatal assault took place the following day after Jayamma objected to the duo’s drinking.

Case registered, probe continues

Police have registered a case under Sections 103(1) (murder) and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Further investigation is underway to determine the complete sequence of events leading to the elderly woman’s death.
