The Bengaluru daycare abuse case has taken a dramatic turn after the woman who exposed the alleged mistreatment of children was arrested for circulating the viral video that led to the investigation.
According to police, the woman was taken into custody for allegedly sharing sensitive footage of the incidents, arguing that distributing such material constitutes an offence irrespective of its role in bringing the alleged abuse to light. The development has sparked debate over whistleblower protection and the handling of child abuse evidence.
Whistleblower reportedly raised concerns before going public
Officials said the woman had earlier informed her supervisor about the alleged abuse while working at the daycare centre. However, when no action was reportedly taken, she approached Child Helpline officials on June 25 with video evidence.
According to Tilakesh Kumar, Legal and Probation Officer with the District Child Protection Unit, the complaint was formally escalated after her concerns were allegedly ignored internally. Reports also indicate that she lost her job at the facility shortly after raising the issue.
Five daycare staff arrested
The viral footage, which surfaced online last week, allegedly shows staff members mistreating children as young as two years old. Following the video’s circulation, police arrested five women employed at the daycare centre.
The accused have been booked under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act and charged with criminal intimidation under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Investigators believe the alleged abuse may have continued for an extended period without parents’ knowledge.
Investigation continues
Authorities said parents and employees of Capgemini, where the daycare operated, had no direct access to the facility, limiting oversight of its day-to-day functioning. Capgemini clarified that the daycare was managed by an external vendor and that the company had no role in recruitment or daily operations.
