Bengaluru: A 60-year-old woman was found dead in her locked apartment in Chamundinagar under the Girinagar police station limits on Wednesday, nearly 10 to 12 days after her death, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Padmavati, who lived alone on the third floor of an apartment complex. Her children reside in different parts of Bengaluru.

Neighbours alerted police after foul smell

According to police, neighbours had not seen Padmavati for the past 10 to 12 days. They became suspicious after a foul smell began emanating from her locked flat and noticed maggots near the entrance.

Concerned residents immediately informed the Girinagar police.

A police team rushed to the apartment and summoned Padmavati’s family members before breaking open the front door in their presence.

Body found in advanced stage of decomposition

Upon entering the flat, police found Padmavati’s body lying on a bed in an advanced state of decomposition, indicating that she had died several days earlier.

The body was shifted for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

Police begin investigation

The Girinagar police have registered a case of unnatural death and initiated an investigation into the incident.

Officials said they are awaiting the post-mortem report, which is expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding her death.

The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of elderly people living alone and the important role neighbours play in alerting authorities when unusual situations arise.
