Female gig workers in Bengaluru have raised serious concerns over working conditions on online home-service platforms, with lack of toilet access emerging as a major daily struggle.

Women employed in domestic services and beauty work said long hours, heat exposure, strict penalties and absence of basic facilities are affecting their health and dignity.

Toilet access becomes daily challenge

Janani, a 35-year-old worker, said she often avoids drinking water during shifts because she cannot be sure of finding a washroom.

She said some customers do not allow service workers to use household toilets, while public facilities are unavailable in many areas.

Workers said this becomes especially difficult during Bengaluru’s summer heat.

Heat and fines add pressure

Another worker, Lakshmi, said she recently suffered dehydration and had to cancel bookings, only to face financial penalties.

She claimed workers are fined for cancellations and delays, while ratings may also fall, affecting future earnings.

According to her, monthly earnings are reduced significantly after deductions and penalties.

Long hours and insecurity alleged

Selvi said she was removed from work after speaking up for better conditions.

She alleged that workers were expected to remain available for long hours, with limited ability to decline bookings and no job security.

The platform named in reports had not publicly responded to the allegations.

Growing debate on gig worker rights

The issue has renewed wider discussion around labour protections in India’s gig economy, particularly for women working in customer homes and travelling between appointments.

Worker groups say access to toilets, rest spaces, heat protection and fair grievance systems should be treated as basic workplace rights
