A 23-year-old worker from Mizoram died after reportedly suffering an electric shock while working at a factory in the Electronic City area, raising concerns over workplace safety and response protocols.
Incident at factory under investigation
The deceased has been identified as Polim Chakma, an employee of Beamer Food and Beverages Pvt. Ltd. The incident is believed to have occurred on March 11 while he was cleaning or handling machinery at the company’s facility.
Parappana Agrahara Police have registered a case of unnatural death under provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. A post-mortem examination was conducted at St John’s Medical College Hospital, and officials said further findings will depend on medical reports and witness statements.
Safety concerns raised by community
Members of the Bangalore Chakma Students Association (BCSA), along with the All India Chakma Students Union (AICSU), have been closely monitoring the case. Representatives visited the police station and coordinated with authorities and company officials.
Student leaders alleged that workers had previously raised concerns about electrical hazards linked to the machinery involved. They said that if such risks were known, stronger safety measures should have been enforced to prevent such incidents.
While raising the possibility of negligence, community members emphasised that the final conclusion must emerge from the official investigation.
Questions over response time
Concerns have also been raised about delays in completing formalities following the incident. Community representatives pointed out that while the death occurred on March 11, arrangements related to documentation and transportation of the body took several days.
They stressed the importance of quicker response mechanisms, especially in cases involving workers from distant states.
Company announces financial assistance
During discussions with community representatives, a senior manager from the company expressed condolences and termed the incident a tragic loss. As per those present, the company has agreed to provide immediate financial assistance of ₹2–3 lakh to the family.
Additionally, the equivalent of one year’s salary is expected to be transferred to the victim’s father. However, student leaders have urged the company to extend support further, noting that the father lives with a disability.
The company has also committed to covering transportation and related expenses.
Call for accountability
Polim Chakma, a resident of Ajasara village in Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district, had moved to Bengaluru for employment. Community organisations have expressed condolences while calling for transparency, accountability, and stronger workplace safety measures.
Police confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be shared as the inquiry progresses.
