Bengaluru’s long-awaited Namma Metro Yellow Line, connecting RV Road to Bommasandra via the busy Silk Board Junction, may finally see partial commercial operations by the end of May, according to Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL).
Despite the 19.15-km stretch being infrastructure-ready, operations have been delayed due to a shortage of trainsets. So far, only two six-coach trainsets have been delivered. BMRCL Managing Director M Maheshwar Rao, at the launch of the STAMP Nudge Challenge in Electronics City, stated that the Yellow Line’s opening hinges on the timely arrival of a third trainset.
If launched as scheduled, the corridor will initially run with a headway of 20 minutes, servicing just five of the 16 planned stations: RV Road, Jayadeva Hospital, Silk Board, Infosys, and Bommasandra. Even with limited stops, Rao projected that the line could eliminate around 2,000 vehicles per hour on the traffic-choked Hosur Road.
He also encouraged private firms to propose last-mile connectivity solutions like feeder buses and better parking. Rao floated the idea of linking public transport to health and mobility incentives as part of an integrated approach.
BMRCL plans to write to the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) soon, aiming for inspection and safety clearance in May. The third trainset, being built by Titagarh Rail Systems Limited in West Bengal, is expected in Bengaluru between May 10-15.
Future phases, including Phase 2A (Silk Board to KR Pura), are expected between June and September 2026.
