Bengaluru’s beloved tender coconut prices soar past ₹70 this summer
Bengaluru’s summer staple—the refreshing tender coconut—has seen a sharp price hike this season. As of now, roadside vendors are selling high-quality tender coconuts at over ₹70, while prices on online platforms start at ₹80 or more.
Residents are feeling the pinch. Purushotham Shiva from Chamrajpet noted, “Just a few weeks ago, it was ₹35-40. Now, not only are prices up by 50%, but the water quantity is also disappointing.” Cheaper coconuts priced between ₹25-40 are often fully matured, containing thick flesh but barely a sip of water.
This price surge has nudged many Bengalureans toward other thirst quenchers. Some have turned to sharbat, priced at ₹30 a glass, while others prefer affordable options like buttermilk, fresh juices, or cut fruits.
Vendors say price hikes during summer are typical, but this year’s increase is steeper due to reduced supply. Bengaluru’s tender coconuts mainly come from Maddur, Malavalli, Ramanagara, Mandya, Hassan, Tumakuru, and parts of Tamil Nadu. However, traders report a lower yield this season, along with rising demand from North India, further squeezing Bengaluru’s supply.
A wholesale trader from Chamrajpet explained, “The shortage and high demand elsewhere have driven up prices locally.” Meanwhile, some vendors are shifting focus to fruits like watermelon as customers opt for cheaper, more filling alternatives.
