Bengaluru’s skyline set to transform with massive double-decker metro corridor
In a bold step to combat the city’s notorious traffic snarls, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) has greenlit a massive 40.65 km double-decker metro corridor under Phase 3 of the Namma Metro expansion. This ambitious initiative blends elevated roadways with metro viaducts, signalling a leap forward in integrated urban transport.
The project comprises two major new stretches: a 32.15 km line from JP Nagar 4th Phase to Kempapura and a 12.5 km line connecting Hosahalli to Kadabagere. These corridors aim to streamline commutes across some of the city’s most congested routes.
An investment of ₹8,916 crore has been earmarked for this mega development. Civil works will absorb ₹6,368 crore, while ₹2,548 crore is set aside for acquiring necessary land. The detailed design blueprints are expected within the next two months, post which the tendering process for civil construction will begin.
Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is also exploring financial support, underlining international interest in Bengaluru’s evolving infrastructure.
This marks BMRCL’s second attempt at a double-decker configuration, following a smaller 3 km stretch between Central Silk Board and Ragigudda. The structure promises to enhance road mobility while expanding metro access—cutting down travel time and reducing pressure on arterial roads.
Once complete, this corridor could redefine how Bengaluru moves—by building up, not just out.
