Shivamogga: BJP leaders, led by Shivamogga MLA S.N. Channabasappa, submitted a memorandum to Superintendent of Police Mithun Kumar seeking legal action against Muslim community leaders who organised a protest opposing amendments to the Waqf Act.

The protest, held on May 3 in front of the DC office, reportedly caused road blockages and disrupted public movement. BJP representatives alleged that the protest was unlawful, especially since the Waqf Act amendments are currently under judicial scrutiny, and courts have restricted demonstrations or official support in such cases.

The BJP claimed that despite court-imposed limitations, the protest went ahead with apparent facilitation from the authorities, including the provision of security. They also accused protestors of delivering provocative speeches during the gathering.

MLA Channabasappa asserted that protests on sub-judice matters undermine the judiciary’s authority and called for strict action against those involved. “Despite court instructions, such demonstrations have been held in multiple parts of the state, including Shivamogga. The law must take its course to ensure accountability,” he said.

The BJP urged the SP to register criminal cases against all organisers and participants, citing defiance of legal restrictions and public order concerns.
