European aerospace major Airbus has inaugurated a large technology centre in Bengaluru, strengthening its presence in India and expanding its role in the country’s growing aerospace and technology ecosystem.

The new facility will serve as a central hub for digital transformation, advanced engineering, procurement operations and global customer support for Airbus programmes.

One of Airbus’ largest centres outside Europe

Spread across 880,000 square feet, the new campus has the capacity to accommodate nearly 5,000 employees, making it one of Airbus’ largest digital and engineering centres outside Europe.

Officials said the centre represents a significant expansion of Airbus’ long-standing operations in Bengaluru, where the company has maintained a specialised engineering unit for nearly two decades.

Jürgen Westermeier, President and Managing Director of Airbus in India and South Asia, said the new facility will help the company scale up its operations and support growing aviation demand.

He noted that the centre will play an important role in advancing Airbus’ “Make in India” strategy, which focuses on increasing local participation in the global aerospace supply chain.

Supporting next-generation aviation technologies

The Bengaluru technology centre will integrate Indian engineers and digital specialists into the full lifecycle of Airbus aircraft development and maintenance.

Teams at the facility will work on maintaining and improving existing commercial aircraft and helicopter programmes while also exploring future aviation technologies.

Key focus areas include artificial intelligence, robotics, cybersecurity and next-generation aircraft design, reflecting the increasing role of digital innovation in aviation.

Industry observers say the move highlights Bengaluru’s growing importance as a global hub for aerospace engineering and advanced technology research.

Government leaders attend inauguration

The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior government leaders and industry representatives.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and Industries Minister M.B. Patil were present at the event, while Union Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu Kinjarapu joined the ceremony virtually.

State officials said the investment further strengthens Karnataka’s position as a leading destination for aerospace and technology companies in India.

With global aviation undergoing rapid technological transformation, Airbus’ expanded presence in Bengaluru is expected to contribute to innovation, job creation and the growth of India’s aerospace capabilities.
