ANANTAPUR: In a pioneering move, 250 Rapido electric bikes have been allotted to women self-help group (SHG) members in Anantapur, marking a first-of-its-kind initiative in India to promote self-employment among women.
At a function held on Saturday at the Police Parade Grounds, Collector Dr. B. Vinod Kumar and Urban MLA D Daggupati Prasad handed over the first batch of 20 e-bikes. These vehicles were procured through MEPMA’s Anantapur Urban unit.
Speaking at the event, the collector announced that the Andhra Pradesh government has partnered with Rapido to launch women rider services in urban areas. Under this scheme, SHG members can avail bank loans with affordable EMIs of just ₹1,000 per month, and as the vehicles are electric, no fuel expenses are involved.
MLA Prasad highlighted the leadership of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who is actively promoting women’s economic independence. He noted that women drivers could earn ₹15,000–₹18,000 per month, providing a steady income source.
Officials including Anantapur Municipal Commissioner Balaswamy, MEPMA Director Vishwa Jyoti, and DRDA Director Shailaja also attended.
This trailblazing initiative aims to empower women and boost urban mobility with eco-friendly, zero-emission vehicles.
