Google Chat is set to receive a long-awaited update, with the platform preparing to roll out a message scheduling feature, bringing it in line with popular messaging services such as iMessage, Telegram and Google Messages.

Google has confirmed that message scheduling has been one of the most requested features from users, and its introduction is aimed at making workplace and personal communication more thoughtful and efficient.

Designed for flexible and respectful communication

The upcoming feature will allow users to schedule messages up to 120 days in advance, helping them avoid sending messages late at night or during off-hours, particularly when colleagues are in different time zones.

Google says this update will support more productive and seamless communication, enabling users to plan conversations without interrupting recipients at inconvenient times.

How message scheduling works

Using the new feature will be straightforward. Users can:

  • Draft a message as usual
  • Tap the down arrow icon next to the send button
  • Choose a specific date and time for delivery

Once scheduled, the conversation will display a banner above the compose box, indicating that a message is pending. Google Chat will also introduce a new Drafts shortcut in the left sidebar, allowing users to view, edit, reschedule or cancel scheduled messages from a single place.

Rollout timeline and availability

Message scheduling has already begun rolling out in phases. Google expects it to be widely available by mid-January 2026.

Importantly, the feature will not be paywalled. It will be accessible to:

  • Google Workspace customers
  • Workspace Individual subscribers
  • Users with personal Google accounts

A step closer to feature parity

Gmail has long supported email scheduling, and the addition of this functionality to Google Chat brings the service closer to feature parity with modern messaging platforms. For professionals, students and teams relying on Chat for daily coordination, the update promises greater control and convenience in managing conversations.
