Google is reportedly set to implement significant changes at its Hyderabad and Bengaluru offices following a global round of layoffs by its parent company, Alphabet. These changes are part of a broader initiative to realign resources and operations as the tech giant navigates a workforce overhaul.
Alphabet has already laid off hundreds of employees from its Platforms and Devices division, which includes major products like Android, Pixel smartphones, and the Chrome browser. As part of these ongoing changes, sources have indicated that job cuts in India, particularly in advertising, sales, and marketing roles, could be announced as early as next month.
However, an insider familiar with Google’s plans reassured that most roles in India are expected to remain secure. The layoffs are anticipated to be concentrated in the US, EU, and UK, where certain divisions are reportedly overstaffed.
This latest wave of layoffs follows a voluntary exit program offered in January 2025, which was part of Google’s ongoing restructuring efforts. A company spokesperson confirmed these changes, noting that since merging the Platforms and Devices teams, Google has been working to operate more efficiently, including both voluntary and involuntary job reductions.
Although the immediate impact on Google’s Indian workforce seems minimal, industry experts caution that the uncertainty in the tech sector could lead to slower recruitment and a more cautious hiring environment in the near future. This move extends Alphabet’s ongoing strategy to optimize resources and focus on its core product teams.
