Los Angeles: Hollywood production company Hello Sunshine has reportedly laid off around 30 employees, nearly half its workforce, following its reacquisition by founder Reese Witherspoon and French media group Mediawan. The job cuts are part of a restructuring that will narrow the company’s focus towards film and television production, Reese’s Book Club and selected marketing and business partnership activities.

The reported layoffs come less than three weeks after Witherspoon and Mediawan completed the buyback from Candle Media, which had acquired a majority stake in Hello Sunshine in 2021. The change in ownership has been followed by a significant shift in the company’s business priorities, including a reduction in its direct-to-consumer operations and lifestyle-related activities.

Around 30 employees affected by restructuring

According to reports by US entertainment publications, approximately 30 employees have been let go, representing close to half of Hello Sunshine’s staff. The company has not publicly confirmed the reported number of job losses.

The restructuring is expected to leave the company with a more focused operating structure. Its remaining teams are expected to concentrate on developing and producing films and television programmes, expanding Reese’s Book Club, handling social and digital marketing, and building business partnerships.

The direct-to-consumer division is among the areas being scaled back. Hello Sunshine had expanded beyond traditional film and television production into lifestyle offerings, merchandise and other consumer-facing activities. The latest changes indicate a move away from some of these ventures towards the company’s core entertainment and book-related operations.

The reported cuts also follow earlier rounds of workforce reductions during the company’s previous ownership under Candle Media. Hello Sunshine has therefore experienced more than one phase of organisational restructuring in recent years.

Witherspoon and Mediawan reacquire the company

Witherspoon and Mediawan reacquired Hello Sunshine from Candle Media in October 2026. The transaction brought the production company back under the influence of its co-founder, who established the business in 2016.

Candle Media, backed by private equity firm Blackstone, had acquired a majority stake in Hello Sunshine in 2021. The earlier transaction valued the company at approximately $900 million, reflecting the strong investor interest in entertainment businesses during the streaming industry’s expansion.

The reported price for the latest buyback was substantially lower. Media reports, citing people familiar with the transaction, placed the deal in the low-to-mid eight-figure range, potentially around $50 million. The final transaction value and detailed terms have not been publicly disclosed.

The difference between the earlier valuation and the reported buyback price has attracted attention across the entertainment industry. However, the two figures should be treated as reported estimates rather than a confirmed like-for-like comparison, as the full terms and structure of the latest transaction have not been made public.

For Witherspoon, the deal represents a return to the company she helped build. Mediawan’s involvement is expected to provide access to a larger international production network and opportunities to develop projects for different markets and distribution platforms.

Company to prioritise film, television and Reese’s Book Club

Hello Sunshine has developed a portfolio of film and television projects, many of which are based on popular books and feature women-led stories. Its productions include Big Little Lies, The Morning Show, Little Fires Everywhere, Daisy Jones & The Six, From Scratch and The Last Thing He Told Me.

The company was also behind the film adaptation of Where the Crawdads Sing. These projects have helped establish its presence in the international entertainment industry and strengthened its association with book-to-screen adaptations.

Reese’s Book Club is another important part of its business. Launched by Witherspoon, the platform promotes selected books and connects readers with authors and stories. The initiative has also created opportunities for selected titles to be developed into film and television projects.

The revised strategy is expected to place greater emphasis on these established activities. Rather than maintaining a wider range of consumer-facing ventures, Hello Sunshine is expected to concentrate resources on content development, production, the book club and partnerships that support those areas.

The restructuring does not mean that the company is withdrawing from digital marketing. Social media, digital promotion and brand partnerships are among the activities expected to remain part of its operations.

A changing entertainment business landscape

Hello Sunshine’s restructuring comes amid broader changes in the global entertainment industry. Production companies have faced pressure as streaming platforms reassess content budgets, commission fewer projects in some categories and place greater emphasis on financial returns.

The rapid expansion of streaming services earlier in the decade encouraged investment in production houses and content libraries. However, changes in subscriber growth, advertising markets and production spending have prompted companies across the industry to review their costs and business models.

The company’s earlier expansion into lifestyle and direct-to-consumer activities also reflected an effort to build commercial opportunities around Witherspoon’s audience and brand. The latest restructuring suggests that the new ownership intends to place more emphasis on the production business and the book club.

For employees, the reported reduction represents a substantial change soon after the ownership transition. For the company, the immediate challenge will be to maintain its production pipeline and established brands with a smaller workforce.

Neither the reported number of affected employees nor the full financial details of the buyback have been officially confirmed by the company. The longer-term impact of the restructuring will depend on its ability to develop commercially successful projects and strengthen its position within Mediawan’s wider production network.
