The Karnataka Maritime Board (KMB) has issued a global tender for the development of a 14 MTPA (Million Tons Per Annum) All-Weather Deepwater Port at Pavinakurve, Karnataka, under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The tender was announced on the Karnataka Public Procurement Portal (KPPP) on November 12.

The proposed port will be located near Pavinakurve village, situated along the coast in the estuarine region of River Sharavathi and River Badagani in Honnavar Taluk. This strategically positioned port is designed to handle various cargoes, including iron ore, coal, coking coal, limestone, dolomite, green hydrogen, green ammonia, LNG, and finished steel products. The initial cargo handling capacity is planned at 14 MTPA, with potential to expand to approximately 40 MTPA in the future.

Key features of the port will include state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly equipment and deep draft berthing facilities for handling cape-size vessels of up to 1,80,000 DWT capacity. The required land for the port’s backup area, estimated at 214 hectares, will be created through reclamation using dredged material from the project.

The estimated project cost for the development of the port is Rs 3047.86 crore, as per KMB’s CEO, Jayaram Raipura. Interested bidders can download the tender documents from the KPPP portal. A pre-bid meeting is scheduled for December 10, with bids due by January 9. The project will be awarded to the bidder quoting the highest royalty per metric ton of cargo handled at the port.
