Raghunandan Kamath, the founder of Natural Ice Cream, has died, his company said in an online post. He was 75 and died Friday night after a brief illness.

“Our thoughts on the sad demise of our patron and founder of Naturals Ice Cream, Late (Shri) Raghunandan Kamath. Indeed a very sad and unfortunate day for us,” the company said.

Mr Kamath grew up helping his father in selling mangoes in a village Karnataka’s Mangaluru. This was when he learned the art of picking the ripe fruit, plucking it, sorting it, and preserving it.

With the goal of making handmade ice cream with actual fruit pulp, he dropped out of school at 14 and started working in his brother’s restaurant.

In the Juhu scheme suburbs of Bombay, he established the first ice cream shop in 1984 with just six employees and a dozen flavours. He added five more stores in 1994 as a result of the increasing demand. It currently operates more than 165 stores in 15 cities.

According to the company website, Kamath created inventive machines to ensure consistency and speed up production, drawing inspiration from his mother’s methods.
