Forget the latest flagship smartphones—South Korea’s millennials and Gen Z are embracing Youngtro, a nostalgic movement reviving older iPhones and digital cameras.

The trend isn’t about high-performance specs but rather aesthetic appeal. Many prefer the minimalist designs of Steve Jobs-era iPhones and the soft, unfiltered tones captured by their older cameras, offering a raw, vintage feel missing in today’s AI-enhanced photography.

The iPhone SE phenomenon is a key part of this resurgence. According to Korean marketplace Bungaejangter, listings for the iPhone 6S surged by 519% in 2023, while sales rose 28%. A student told The Korea Times, “I find old iPhones more visually appealing than newer ones.” Another added, “The color tones in older iPhone photos feel more authentic.”

More than just iPhones

Beyond smartphones, classic digital cameras, wired headphones, and vintage camcorders are making a major comeback. Even celebrities are hopping on the trend, showing off nostalgic tech in their social media posts. Interest spiked in December 2023 when K-pop group NewJeans (NJZ) used a vintage camcorder to shoot scenes for their “Ditto” music video.

For many, Youngtro isn’t just a trend—it’s a lifestyle shift toward simpler, less polished digital experiences.
