Tumakuru is being groomed as a rising hub for IT and BT companies, thanks to its skilled workforce and close proximity to Bengaluru. During a recent visit, Karnataka Digital Economy Mission (KDEM) CEO Sanjeev Kumar Gupta noted that nearly 5,000 tech professionals commute daily from Tumakuru to Bengaluru for work. This insight has sparked efforts to attract companies to set up operations closer to the talent.
IT/BT Secretary Dr Ekroop Kaur and Director Rahul S Sankanur are actively engaging with industry players, emphasizing the incentives for operating in tier-II cities. Though earlier plans included developing industry clusters in Mysuru and Dakshina Kannada, Tumakuru now stands out due to its strategic location and abundant talent pool—bolstered by seven engineering colleges producing thousands of graduates annually.
To draw investment, Deputy Commissioner Subha Kalyan announced plans to host an open house, inviting around 150 IT/BT companies to explore 30,000 sq ft of ready-to-use office space within the city. Though 100 acres were previously allocated for industry use in Vasanthanarasapura, interest was limited due to distance. Hence, officials are now offering city-based options with lower rental costs compared to Bengaluru.
Kalyan has urged local IT/BT professionals traveling to Bengaluru to register details via her official X (formerly Twitter) account, helping build a talent database to further engage companies.
IT-BT Minister Priyank Kharge revealed that the department will soon launch an incubation centre in Tumakuru, aimed at nurturing local graduates and eventually creating a Global Capability Centre.
