WhatsApp is about to launch a significant update, allowing users to enhance their privacy with new options for sharing contact information.

The new feature, known as Username and PIN, aims to give WhatsApp users more control over their contact information. According to WaBetaInfo, which tracks WhatsApp’s upcoming features, this update will allow users to replace their phone numbers with usernames to avoid disclosing their mobile numbers to everyone.

  1. Username Option: Users can opt to display a username instead of their phone number. This will allow new contacts to see only the username while existing contacts will still see the phone number if they already have it saved.
  2. Phone Number Option: Users can continue to use their phone number for contact purposes, maintaining the current setup for those who prefer not to change their privacy settings.
  3. Username with PIN: The most secure option in this update is the Username with PIN feature. Users can set a four-digit PIN along with their username. Only those who have the PIN will be able to initiate contact with them on WhatsApp. However, users should be aware that individuals who already have their phone number saved will still be able to message them, regardless of the PIN setting.

The new privacy options are designed to give users more control over who can contact them initially. By using a username and PIN, users can limit contact to only those who have been given the PIN, thus offering an additional layer of security.

Nevertheless, a noted limitation is that existing contacts will still be able to message users even if they have selected the Username with PIN option. Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, will need to address this potential loophole to fully secure user privacy.

The new feature is currently available for users of WhatsApp’s Android 2.24.18.2 beta version. Stable version users will need to wait for future updates to access these privacy options.
