BENGALURU: The noose is tightening around the masterminds behind the gold smuggling operation allegedly involving Ranya Rao, as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) takes charge of the inquiry. Though an FIR has been lodged, specific details remain undisclosed. This latest move indicates a major escalation, as investigators work to expose the network backing Ranya, who was apprehended by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) while carrying 14.2 kg of gold from Dubai.

CBI’s primary focus is on three key questions: How did Ranya evade the Customs radar despite making frequent trips? Who instructed law enforcement to provide protocol services for her? Was there an influential figure maintaining constant communication with her? Officials will analyze forensic data from her mobile phone and laptop, as well as her travel records. Additionally, they will scrutinize duty assignments at Kempegowda International Airport during her arrivals to identify potential insider complicity.

The role of police protocol staff is under review, especially since Ranya was escorted out of the terminal upon landing. One personnel member claimed he was merely following instructions and was unaware of her smuggling activities.

Despite discussions at top levels, the state government has opted against launching a separate probe. Senior officers insist no powerful politician was involved, stating an IPS officer had ordered the police escort. They emphasize that since the constable followed protocol, no internal inquiry is necessary.
