Chamarajanagar: In a major crackdown on unauthorised transport of minerals, two tippers carrying gravel and stones without valid permits from Karnataka to Kerala were penalised near the Maddur check post in Bandipur.
During a routine inspection, officials from the Mines and Geology Department intercepted the tippers, which were en route from Gundlupet towards Kerala. The inspection revealed that the vehicles were transporting material without the necessary documentation or permits, a clear violation of mining and transport regulations.
A total fine of ₹91,620 was levied. One vehicle, bearing registration number KL 08 CA 0331, was fined ₹51,620, while another tipper, currently in police custody, faced a penalty of ₹40,000.
Authorities suspect that organized fraudsters from Kerala are exploiting this illegal operation to siphon off lakhs of rupees in resources daily, causing both financial and environmental losses to Karnataka.
Officials have termed it a case of “capital-level fraud”, noting that such illegal cross-border movement of resources continues to be a persistent issue, especially along the Bandipur region which borders Kerala.
The Mines and Geology Department has warned of stricter surveillance and intensified inspections in the coming days to deter similar violations.
Further legal action is underway, and both vehicles are being held for investigation.
