Tensions flared in Kanaganakuppa village of Manchenahalli taluk, Chikkaballapur, after a protest against road construction to a stone-crusher site took a violent turn on Wednesday, leaving one villager shot.

The demonstration, which had remained peaceful for days, escalated when Sakalesh—identified as the crusher site lessee and a known associate of a BJP functionary—arrived with earth-moving equipment to begin work. Eyewitnesses say an argument broke out with villagers, culminating in Sakalesh allegedly opening fire and injuring protest leader Ravi in the knee.

Villagers deny claims of stone-pelting, asserting that Sakalesh pulled out a pistol unprovoked and challenged them. “He dared anyone to come close and then fired,” said one protester. Locals allege that Sakalesh also kicked Ravi after he fell to the ground, before being restrained.

The road, planned to pass through agricultural land and near two temples, has faced local opposition for its potential impact on both ecology and religious sanctity. “We are protecting our land and temples,” Ravi said before being taken to Chikkaballapur General Hospital.

Police have arrested Sakalesh and seized the 9mm pistol. An investigation is underway, confirmed SP Kushal Chousky.
