Chikkamagaluru: Police detained two migrant workers from Assam for allegedly selling beef under the guise of a sweet stall at a weekly market in Mudigere’s Banakal on Monday.

The suspects, employed as daily wage laborers, had set up a stall claiming to sell sweets. Upon suspicion, a group of right-wing activists questioned them and alerted the police. An inspection revealed beef stored in a container wrapped in plastic.

Following the discovery, the activists accused the Banakal gram panchayat of negligence and staged a protest outside its office. They demanded accountability for allowing unlicensed businesses to operate and raised concerns about the ongoing illegal beef trade in the area.

Villagers also expressed apprehension about the influx of migrant workers employed in coffee estates, alleging involvement in illegal activities.

In response, police confirmed that an investigation is underway and assured that measures would be taken to support the local administration in preventing violations. Authorities are also working to ensure proper licensing for businesses operating in the region.

The incident has sparked a heated debate over regulatory oversight and the growing concerns surrounding migrant workers in the area.
