In defiance of a stringent government ban, over 200 tourists recently trekked to the restricted area of Ettina Bhuja in Mudigere Taluk, Chikkamagaluru district, prompting a significant backlash from both locals and environmentalists. Despite a clear directive from the Forest Minister prohibiting access to this area, many visitors chose to ignore the restrictions, raising serious concerns about the enforcement of government regulations and the impact on environmental conservation.

The Karnataka Forest Department had imposed strict restrictions on Ettina Bhuja starting June 20, aiming to control tourist influx through an online ticketing system. However, the area’s narrow and rugged terrain, coupled with frequent adverse weather conditions like heavy rains, winds, and fog, has made enforcement challenging. Despite these measures, the ban was blatantly ignored, with tourists continuing to hike in the restricted zone.

Residents and environmental groups have expressed strong objections to the breach of rules, arguing that such unauthorized trekking not only jeopardizes the delicate ecosystem of Ettina Bhuja but also shows a blatant disregard for the protective regulations in place. The area, known for its natural beauty and religious significance, has become a flashpoint in the debate over balancing tourism with environmental preservation.

Local communities and environmental advocates are calling for stricter enforcement of the ban and greater awareness among tourists to prevent future violations and protect the region’s fragile environment.
