Mangaluru: A team from the Central Coffee Research Institute recently assessed Dakshina Kannada’s potential for coffee cultivation, visiting areas like Belthangady, Sullia, and Puttur. The evaluation, still pending final recommendations, aims to support local coffee growers through the Coffee Board and the institute’s expertise. Experts are focusing on quality and climatic requirements to determine the feasibility of coffee as a standalone crop or intercropped with arecanut.
This initiative comes as the district’s arecanut crops have suffered damage due to extreme weather conditions, with 24 hectares affected. Local growers have appealed for relief from fruit rot disease and other challenges.
