Dubai: Mangalore Konkans Dubai, led by its President Stephen Menezes, organised a heartfelt condolence meeting in memory of the late Eric Alexander Ozario (18 May 1949 – 29 August 2025) at Winny’s Restaurant, Karama, on Sunday, 7th September 2025. The event drew an overwhelming turnout, with over 100 members of the community gathering to honour the life and contributions of a towering cultural figure.

Fondly remembered as Eric Baab, Ozario was a beacon of the Konkani community. He was a revered music composer, cultural activist, trade unionist, and the founder of Mandd Sobhann and Kalaangann. His relentless efforts led to the inclusion of Konkani as an optional subject in schools across Karnataka. He also served as Secretary General of the Jagotik Konknni Songhotton (JKS) for many years, shaping the preservation and promotion of the language, arts, and traditions of the Konkani people.

A gathering of memories and gratitude

The condolence meeting, gracefully compered by Melwyn Kalakul, began with a welcome address by Stephen Menezes. The event was marked by a solemn hymn and a moment of silent reflection, during which attendees offered flower petals at the portrait of Eric Baab, symbolising their collective remembrance and respect.

The evening was a heartfelt blend of emotional speeches and soul-stirring music, each reflecting a different aspect of Eric Baab’s life:

  • Roshan D’Silva opened the event with a moving introduction and read a message from James Mendonca, former President of Mangalore Konkans, expressing admiration for Eric Baab’s contributions.

  • Mohammed Naveed Mahagundi spoke about Eric’s role in uniting artists from different religions and languages, followed by his rendition of the song Pois Ravon Polenaka.

  • Darel Vamanjoor recalled Eric’s efforts in mentoring young talents, while Eric’s grandson Eshan sang Raat Raat Radlam.

  • Arther Pereira highlighted his impact on language and culture, with Preema delivering Havn Vetam supported by musicians Darrel Mascarenhas and Eldrich.

  • Monica Valder shared how she was inspired to become a singer because of Eric Baab, while Melwyn D’Souza (MAD) performed Ganv Go Chedva.

  • Dayan D’Souza reflected on Eric’s organisational prowess, followed by a touching performance by his grandchildren Aman and Gia, who sang Fatodechya Kombyan.

  • Dr. Rashmi Fernandes concluded the speeches with a deeply emotional tribute, affirming how proud she is to be Eric Baab’s daughter and expressing her wish that his name and Konkani literature endure for generations.

    Adding to the evening’s warmth, a message from Ronald Colaco, who could not attend due to unforeseen circumstances, was read out by Vice President Rajesh Sequeira. Colaco expressed his deep respect and love for Eric Baab, highlighting the void his passing has left in the community.

    A fitting farewell and celebration of a lifetime’s work

    The program concluded with a vote of thanks and a fellowship dinner where attendees continued sharing personal stories and fond memories. The event stood as a testament to the deep reverence the Konkani community holds for Eric Ozario, whose music, leadership, and vision continue to inspire countless individuals.

    The evening reaffirmed Mangalore Konkans Dubai’s commitment to honouring legacies and preserving the cultural heritage of the Konkani community. Eric Baab’s contributions will remain a guiding light for future generations, ensuring that his passion for music, language, and unity lives on.
