Doha : Billawas Qatar successfully organised a grand Throwball Tournament at The Hamilton International School, Doha, bringing together 20 teams across men’s, women’s and mixed categories. Conducted as part of the Qatar National Sports Day celebrations, the tournament promoted sportsmanship, teamwork, fitness and community engagement among participants and spectators alike.
The tournament was officially inaugurated by Sri Harish Pandey, First Secretary (Education, Culture & Visa), Embassy of India, Doha, Qatar. The ceremony was attended by distinguished guests including Mr Chidananda Naik, Director – M Pallonji (Event Sponsor), Mr Subramanya Hebbagelu, ISC Advisory Member, and dignitaries from ICC, ICBF and ISC, along with Presidents of various community associations.
A celebration of sport and unity
Welcoming the gathering, Ms Aparna Sharath, President of Billawas Qatar, reiterated the organisation’s commitment to community development through sports initiatives. She emphasised that sporting platforms not only promote physical well-being but also strengthen social bonds among members of the diaspora.
The inaugural ceremony was anchored by RJ Asttami, followed by Ms Pooja Jitin and Mr Manju Karigar, who conducted the proceedings with enthusiasm and energy.
Throughout the day, teams displayed competitive spirit and camaraderie, reflecting the growing popularity of throwball within the Indian community in Qatar. The tournament witnessed spirited matches, enthusiastic supporters and disciplined organisation.
Closing ceremony and special recognition
The closing ceremony was graced by H.E. Farhan Al Sheikh Al Sayed, Founder and Patron of Art, Fashion and Cultural Diplomacy, as Chief Guest. In his address, he congratulated Billawas Qatar on the successful conduct of the tournament and highlighted the importance of sports in fostering discipline, unity and healthy living in multicultural societies.
On the occasion, Ms Dhanalaxmi Poojary, World Cup Kabaddi 2025 Champion, was felicitated in recognition of her outstanding sporting achievement. She was honoured with the title “Biruva Bolpu” (Rising Star of Billawas), drawing applause from the gathering.
The closing ceremony proceedings were hosted by Mr Chidananda Rai. The vote of thanks was delivered by Ms Seema Poojary, Sports Secretary, who acknowledged the support of sponsors, organisers, volunteers, teams and members whose collective efforts ensured the success of the event.
