Mysuru: The Diocese of Mysore witnessed a historic and spiritually profound moment on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, as Most Rev. Dr Francis Serrao SJ was officially installed as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Mysore. The solemn ceremony took place at the St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Mysore (St. Philomena’s Shrine), drawing clergy, religious, and laity from across Karnataka.
A Solemn Installation Ceremony
The installation ceremony commenced at 4:30 PM, officiated by Most Rev. Dr Peter Machado, Archbishop of Bangalore. The appointment of Bishop Serrao was made by Pope Leo XIV, entrusting him with the pastoral leadership of the Mysore Diocese. Prior to this appointment, Bishop Serrao served as the Bishop of the Diocese of Shimoga, where he was widely respected for his commitment to pastoral care and social outreach.
Felicitation and Apostolic Blessings
Following the Eucharistic celebration, a felicitation programme was held, presided over by Most Rev. Leopoldo Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal. The event also included a heartfelt farewell to Most Rev. Dr Bernard Moras, who had served as the Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Mysore since January 2023.
The formal proceedings, which lasted over two hours, included the reading of the Papal Bull of Appointment, signifying the official commencement of Bishop Serrao’s episcopal ministry in Mysore.
Warm Welcome and Gratitude
After taking the oath of office, Bishop Serrao received warm felicitations from fellow bishops, priests, religious, and hundreds of faithful who filled the cathedral to witness the significant ecclesiastical milestone. The spirit of faith and unity was palpable as the community welcomed their new shepherd with joy and reverence.
A Humble Shepherd with a Heart for the Marginalised
Born on August 15, 1959, in Moodbidri, Bishop Francis Serrao, aged 66, hails from a devout Catholic family. He is the youngest of eleven children—six of his brothers are priests and one of his sisters is a nun, reflecting a deeply rooted spiritual lineage.
Ordained a priest on April 30, 1992, Bishop Serrao began his pastoral ministry serving the Dalit and tribal communities in Anekal (Bangalore Archdiocese) and Mundgod (Karwar Diocese). His missionary zeal and compassionate approach earned him recognition for uplifting marginalised groups and promoting social justice through faith.
A New Chapter for the Diocese of Mysore
With Bishop Serrao’s installation, the Diocese of Mysore embarks on a renewed spiritual journey encompassing the districts of Mysuru, Mandya, Kodagu, and Chamarajanagar, which collectively comprise 90 parishes. His leadership is expected to bring fresh vision, inclusivity, and pastoral energy to the diocese’s ongoing mission of evangelisation and community development.
Faithful from across Karnataka expressed their joy, describing Bishop Serrao’s appointment as a divine blessing for the diocese. The event symbolised continuity in faith and a commitment to the Church’s mission of service and compassion.
