Jebel Ali: At the heart of the Jebel Ali community are its children, young families, and bachelors, whose active participation shaped this year’s Monthi Fest celebrations by the Jebel Ali Konkani Community (JAKC). The festivities began with a nine-day Novena from August 27 to September 4, involving children at every stage of prayer and worship, highlighting their important role in preserving Konkani traditions in the Gulf.

The Novena liturgies were uniquely conducted by the children themselves, who led prayers, readings, and hymns in Konkani. It was a truly uplifting sight to witness young members of the community engaging in spiritual activities with confidence and devotion far from their native homeland. The experience left families filled with pride and joy, reinforcing the importance of passing down cultural and religious practices to younger generations.

The Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was celebrated with great fervour on September 5. The celebrations commenced in the evening with a floral tribute at the portico of the church between 7:30 pm and 7:40 pm, followed by a festive High Mass at 8 pm. The community was blessed to have Fr. Rocky Saldanha OFM Cap. from St. Anne’s Friary, Mangalore, serve as the main celebrant. He was joined by Fr. Marian Miranda and Fr. Rex as concelebrants, adding spiritual richness to the event.

In his vote of thanks, Adith Lobo, coordinator of JAKC, extended gratitude to the priests, volunteers, and all community members whose support made the celebrations possible.

Following the Mass, over 2,500 Konkani Catholics gathered for the traditional Novem Jevan, a community meal that brought people together in fellowship. The meal was thoughtfully prepared by Caesars Restaurant, Dubai, with facilities management provided by Delmon Group, ensuring a warm and festive atmosphere.

The Monthi Fest celebrations at Jebel Ali resonated with the spirit of unity, devotion, and cultural pride that defines the community. The event not only honoured the birth of Mother Mary but also reaffirmed the community’s commitment to nurturing its heritage, especially among children, who are seen as the torchbearers of Konkani faith and culture in the region.

The JAKC’s Monthi Fest was a resounding success, with heartfelt participation, joyous celebration, and an unwavering sense of togetherness — a testament to the vibrant spirit of the Konkani community in the Gulf.
