A Christmas programme was organised for women inmates at the Central Women’s Prison in Shivamogga on December 12, spreading a message of hope, compassion and renewal.

The event was organised by volunteers of Prison Ministry India (PMI)–Shimoga, in collaboration with the sisters, staff and students of Mary Immaculate Convent and School. Prison officials, volunteers and inmates were present, making the celebration a moment of shared humanity within the prison premises.

Warm welcome and spirit of togetherness

Sr. Elize Lurdh SCB, Secretary of the Women Commission of the Diocese of Shimoga, welcomed the gathering and highlighted the importance of reaching out to those living on the margins of society, especially during occasions such as Christmas.

She emphasised that festivals are meant to inspire hope, forgiveness and new beginnings — values that resonate deeply within correctional institutions.

Carols, skits and festive performances

The programme featured Christmas carols, skits and dance performances presented by Sisters Rita Shanthi SCB, Shobhana SCB, Cynthia SCB, Rose Maria and Elize Lurdh SCB, along with staff and students of Mary Immaculate Convent and School.

The performances were received warmly by the inmates, creating a festive atmosphere inside the prison and offering a brief but meaningful escape from routine life.

Message of Christmas and Jubilee Year 2025

Addressing the gathering, Sr. Rita Shanthi SCB and Sr. Shobhana SCB spoke on the spiritual significance of Christmas. They explained the biblical account of the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, the symbolism of the Christmas crib, and the meaning behind the visit of the shepherds and the Magi.

The speakers also referred to Jubilee Year 2025, which commemorates the birth of Christ, highlighting its spiritual importance as a time of grace, reconciliation and renewal.

Solidarity with inmates

The programme concluded with messages of goodwill and solidarity with the women inmates, reinforcing the belief that dignity, faith and compassion remain vital, regardless of circumstance.

Prison officials appreciated the initiative, noting that such programmes play a positive role in emotional well-being and rehabilitation.
