Thoothukudi: A Dalit Class 12 student, Devendran Raj, was brutally attacked by three assailants on his way to school in Thoothukudi district. The attackers dragged him off a bus and assaulted him with sharp weapons, severing four of his fingers. He is currently in critical condition at a government hospital in Tirunelveli.
The Srivaikuntam police have arrested three suspects, including two minors. Reports suggest the attack was triggered by a kabaddi match victory, which the accused from Kettiyammalpuram allegedly could not tolerate.
Condemning the attack, VCK president Thol Thirumavalavan urged the Tamil Nadu government to provide the best medical care for Devendran. He also demanded the formation of a special police intelligence unit to prevent caste-based violence, which he says is rampant in Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi.
