Mangaluru: A spirit of joy and thanksgiving filled Zuze Vaz Home, Nandigudda, on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, as Rev. Fr Francis Xavier Gomes, one of the most respected priests of the Diocese of Mangalore, celebrated his 75th birthday and 50 years of priestly service. The platinum jubilee of his life and ministry was marked with a solemn Thanksgiving Eucharist, followed by a grand felicitation ceremony attended by bishops, clergy, dignitaries, and well-wishers from across the region.

Thanksgiving Eucharist Highlights Spiritual Legacy

The celebration began with a Thanksgiving Eucharist at 10:30 a.m. in the Zuze Vaz Home Chapel, presided over by Most Rev. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangalore. Concelebrating the Holy Mass were Most Rev. Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza (Bishop Emeritus of Mangalore), Most Rev. Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo (Bishop of Udupi), Most Rev. Dr Robert M. Miranda (Bishop of Gulbarga), Most Rev. Dr Lawrence Mukkuzhi (Bishop of Belthangady), and Rt Rev. James Patteril, designated Bishop of Belthangady.

The chapel was filled with priests, religious sisters, family members, and well-wishers who joined in thanksgiving for Fr Gomes’ life of service, faith, and leadership.

Homily Reflects on Priesthood as a Divine Calling

In his homily, Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo spoke on the sacred vocation of priesthood as “a bridge between God and man.” He described Fr Gomes as a faithful servant who, over five decades, embodied Christ’s compassion through his roles as pastor, educator, and mentor.

“Rooted in the words, ‘I have called you by name; you are mine,’ Fr Gomes has lived his calling with humility and unwavering faith,” the Bishop said.

Felicitation Ceremony Honours a Life of Service

The felicitation programme that followed in the St Zuze Vaz Home Hall gathered bishops, clergy, and community leaders. Dignitaries present included Vinaya Kumar Sorake (Former Minister), J.R. Lobo (Former MLA), Dr M. Mohan Alva (Chairman, Alva’s Education Foundation), Msgr. Leslie Shenoy, and Very Rev. Maxim Noronha, Vicar General of the Diocese of Mangalore.

A Toast to an Educator and Visionary Leader

In his address, Dr M. Mohan Alva hailed Fr Gomes as an institution builder and visionary educator whose contribution to the field of education has left a lasting impact.

“Fr Gomes has gone beyond academics to shape minds and hearts. His leadership reflects discipline, moral strength, and a deep sense of mission,” Dr Alva said.

Honouring the Bishops and Fellow Priests

In a touching gesture of humility, Fr Gomes personally honoured all the bishops present, expressing gratitude for their companionship and guidance throughout his priestly journey. His reverence for his peers and seniors deeply moved the gathering.

Recognition for Academic Excellence

The celebration also included a special felicitation for Dr Praveen Martis, SJ, Principal of St Aloysius College (Autonomous), in recognition of the college’s achievement in becoming a Deemed-to-be University — a milestone celebrated as a moment of pride for the Mangaluru community.

An Emotional Expression of Gratitude

In his response, a visibly moved Fr Francis Xavier Gomes expressed heartfelt gratitude to God for the blessings of life and priesthood.

“My heart overflows with gratitude to the Almighty for guiding me for 50 years in His vineyard. The love and prayers of all gathered here have been my greatest strength,” he said.

Bishop Saldanha Praises a Priest of Vision and Faith

Delivering the presidential address, Bishop Peter Paul Saldanha praised Fr Gomes as a visionary educator and priest of deep faith.

“Fr Gomes’ legacy lies not only in the institutions he led but in the countless lives he transformed with wisdom and compassion,” Bishop Saldanha said.

He then felicitated Fr Gomes with a shawl and garland, symbolising the Church’s appreciation for his decades of service and dedication.

A Celebration to Remember

The event was gracefully compered by Mr Rajesh D’Souza, and the day concluded with a fellowship meal, where guests shared fond memories and extended warm wishes. The celebration reflected Fr Gomes’ life of faith, education, and service — one that continues to inspire generations.
