Prayagraj: The Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj entered its third day on Wednesday, with thousands of devotees enduring bitter cold and dense fog to take the holy dip at the Triveni Sangam, the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers. While Wednesday was not a significant bathing day, large numbers of devotees and religious groups from across India and beyond gathered to participate in the festival.
The Mahakumbh Mela, which began on January 13, will continue until February 26. Key bathing days still to come include Mauni Amavasya on January 29, Basant Panchami on February 3, Maghi Purnima on February 12, and Maha Shivaratri on February 26. The first major bathing days were January 13, the official opening, and January 14, when Makar Sankranti brought a record number of pilgrims for the first ‘Amrit Snan’, a special sacred bath led by ash-smeared Naga sadhus and various akharas (ascetics’ sects).
On Wednesday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath convened a high-level review meeting to ensure proper arrangements for the 8 crore devotees expected for the Mauni Amavasya on January 29. In the meeting, CM Yogi emphasized the importance of smooth logistics and infrastructure to accommodate the massive crowds, following the successful bathing events of Paush Purnima and Makar Sankranti, where over 6 crore people had already participated.
Due to the traffic congestion after the first ‘Shahi Snan’ on Tuesday, schools in Prayagraj from class 1 to 8 were declared closed on Wednesday.
