The Diocese of Mangalore finds itself caught between celebration and mourning, as it rejoices over the election of a new Pope while grieving the lives lost in a brutal terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.

In an official statement, Bishop Peter Paul Saldanha conveyed both heartfelt congratulations and solemn prayers. He announced the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as the new leader of the Catholic Church, who will now be known as Pope Leo XIV, succeeding Pope Francis. The Bishop described this transition as a moment of “immense happiness and spiritual renewal” for the global Catholic community.

However, this joyous occasion has been deeply overshadowed by the shocking terrorist attack that targeted innocent tourists in Pahalgam. Bishop Saldanha expressed sorrow and condemnation over the “cruel and cowardly” act that took multiple lives and injured many others. He urged the faithful to stand in prayerful solidarity with the victims and their grieving families.

The Bishop also praised the bravery and dedication of India’s armed forces who, he said, “selflessly protect the nation and its people.” He called on all parishes to hold special prayers during Eucharistic Adoration following Sunday Mass on May 11, dedicating them to the victims, the injured, and the soldiers guarding India’s frontiers.

This unique convergence of celebration and mourning calls the faithful to both rejoice and reflect.
