After presiding over Mass at the Basilica of St. John Lateran, Pope Leo XIV made his way to the revered Basilica of Saint Mary Major. There, in quiet reverence, he knelt in the Pauline Chapel before the sacred icon Salus Populi Romani—a cherished image through which generations of Popes, including Pope Francis, have lifted their most earnest prayers for the Church.
The Pontiff laid floral offerings before the ancient depiction of Mary and intoned the Magnificat. He then paused in silent prayer at the tomb of his predecessor, Pope Francis, who rests within the same basilica.
Stepping onto the loggia, Pope Leo greeted the faithful assembled outside. “Peace be with you!” he began, his voice filled with warmth. “Thank you for coming this evening as we, the Roman Diocese, mark the beginning of our journey with its new Bishop. It brings me immense joy to see all of you here—my heartfelt thanks.”
He went on to express gratitude to the clergy and staff who serve within the basilica, acknowledging the cardinals present and all who support the spiritual mission of the Church.
Pope Leo encouraged all to deepen their bond with the Blessed Virgin Mary. He said this gathering was a powerful reminder to revive devotion to the Mother of God, whose presence in the icon of Salus Populi Romani has comforted the city through countless hardships.
The Pope concluded by leading a Hail Mary, granting his Apostolic Blessing, and wishing everyone a blessed evening.
