Bantwal: The parish community of St Thomas the Apostle Church, Nirkan, celebrated a joyful and memorable occasion as they felicitated Edward Baretto on his appointment as Coadjutor Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Darjeeling. The faithful gathered in large numbers to offer their prayers, wishes and unwavering support for his new pastoral mission.
Floral welcome and thanksgiving Eucharist
The celebrations began at 9:15 am with a warm floral welcome accorded to Bishop Edward Baretto by the Parish Priest, members of the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC), parishioners and his family members. The gesture reflected the deep affection and pride of the community.
A solemn thanksgiving Eucharistic celebration followed, presided over by Bishop Edward Baretto. The Holy Mass was concelebrated by Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mangalore, and Stephen Lepcha, along with several priests. The church resonated with prayerful hymns and expressions of gratitude as the congregation joined in thanksgiving.
Felicitation programme at the church hall
Following the Mass, a felicitation programme was organised at the St Thomas Church Hall, Nirkan. The programme commenced with a graceful prayer dance performed by parish children.
Bishop Edward Baretto was first felicitated on behalf of the parish community. The parish choir rendered a heartfelt wishing song in his honour. Members of St Antony Ward, his Baretto family and various parish groups came forward to extend their greetings and assure him of their continued prayers.
Dignitaries present included Bishop Stephen Lepcha; Rev. Fr Victor D’Souza, Vicar Forane of Bantwal Deanery; Rev. Fr Anil Roshan Lobo, Parish Priest; Austin Lobo, Vice President of the PPC; Shanthi Veigas, Secretary of the PPC; and Stany Lobo, Coordinator of Commissions of Nirkan Church.
Austin Lobo welcomed the gathering, while Jayesh Baretto delivered the vote of thanks. The programme was compered by Henvil Walder and Meleena Crasta.
