Mangaluru: ‘Sur Suray’, a musical nite celebrating Hindustani classical vocals and Konkani compositions, was presented by the children of Sur Sobhann Vocal Training School at Kalaangann, Shaktinagar. The programme marked the 290th presentation in the Mandd Sobhann Monthly Theatre Series and drew an appreciative audience of parents, music lovers, and cultural enthusiasts.

Inauguration and dignitaries

The programme was inaugurated by Richard Moras, Convenor of the Konkani Lekhak Sangh, by ringing the ceremonial bell. Members of the Mandd Sobhann committee, including Louis J. Pinto, Rony Crasta, and Alron Rodrigues, were present on the मंच, lending support to the young performers. The evening began with a soulful flute recital by Aston Pinto, setting a serene tone before the start of the theatre programme.

Classical training and experimental presentations

Students trained under noted Hindustani classical vocalist Shilpa Tejaswini Cutinha rendered a series of classical ragas alongside select Konkani songs, reflecting both discipline and creativity nurtured through structured vocal training. A special highlight of the evening was an experimental segment in which compositions by Eric Ozario were presented in classical sargam style, performed publicly for the first time.

Co-trainer Dealle D’Souza and several parents of the students also took part in the programme, each presenting a song and reinforcing the spirit of collective participation and encouragement.

Interactive learning through music

Adding an educational dimension to the concert, Shilpa Cutinha engaged the audience in an interactive session, demonstrating the swaras of Raga Yaman and encouraging the audience to sing along. She later delivered a solo performance, which was warmly received by the audience.

Musical direction and ensemble support

The programme was musically directed by young musician Ketan Castelino, with instrumental support from Ashwil Colaco, Hanson Lasrado, Shanan Cutinha, and Ayston Rodrigues, whose accompaniment enhanced the classical and Konkani renditions.

Student comperes lead the evening

The event was confidently and enthusiastically compered by a team of students who also introduced the musical presentations. The comperes included Neha Castelino, Aston Fernandes, Ria Mascarenhas, Stalan D’Souza, Lisa Pinto, Norvin D’Souza, Rincia Monteiro, Hazel D’Souza, Sweethan Lobo, Viona Pinto, Simona Saldanha, Andrick Pinto, Shania D’Souza, and Sanjana Mathias. Their poised stage presence added vibrancy and continuity to the programme.

The musical nite concluded on an uplifting note, reaffirming Mandd Sobhann’s long-standing commitment to nurturing young talent and promoting Konkani culture and classical music through its monthly theatre series.
