Mangaluru: ‘Sur Suray’ (Melodious Music), a special musical programme featuring over 100 students of the Sur Sobhann Vocal Training School, will be held on Sunday, February 1, 2026, at 6.30 pm at Kalaangann, Shaktinagar. The programme is open to the public with free entry.

The event marks the 290th programme in the Monthly Theatre Series organised by Mandd Sobhann, continuing its long-standing commitment to nurturing and showcasing Konkani and Indian classical performing arts.

Showcasing classical training and cultural roots

Students trained under the mentorship of renowned singer and Hindustani classical music teacher Shilpa Tejaswini Cutinha will present a curated repertoire of Hindustani ragas, alongside select Konkani songs. The concert is designed to highlight the depth of classical training imparted to young learners, while also celebrating regional musical traditions.

The programme offers a platform for children to demonstrate not only their vocal abilities but also their confidence and stage presence, reflecting Mandd Sobhann’s emphasis on holistic cultural education.

Experimental segment adds a unique dimension

A distinctive highlight of the evening will be an experimental performance, where selected compositions by Eric Ozario will be rendered for the first time using classical sargam-based structures. This innovative segment seeks to explore new musical expressions while remaining rooted in classical grammar, offering audiences a fresh listening experience.

Adding to the uniqueness of the programme, the children themselves will introduce the songs and compeer the event, giving them an opportunity to take ownership of the stage and engage directly with the audience. In a special gesture of encouragement and community bonding, parents of the students will also present a song, reinforcing the collective spirit behind the initiative.

Instrumental ensemble and musical direction

The concert will be presented under the musical direction of emerging artiste Ketan Castelino. The instrumental ensemble will feature Ashwil Colaco, Hanson Lasrado, Shanan Cutinha, and Ayston Rodrigues, whose accompaniment is expected to add richness and balance to the vocal performances.

Continuing a legacy of cultural engagement

With ‘Sur Suray’, Mandd Sobhann continues its tradition of providing a professional platform for young artistes, encouraging experimentation, and fostering appreciation for classical and Konkani music among wider audiences. The programme reflects the organisation’s sustained efforts to keep cultural practices vibrant, relevant, and accessible to the community.
