Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the withdrawal of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, citing concerns over its impact on the Muslim community. Stalin emphasized that the proposed changes undermine constitutional protections for minorities and could weaken Waqf Boards’ authority in managing religious endowments.

The Tamil Nadu Assembly had already passed a resolution on March 27, 2025, requesting the Union government to scrap the Bill. Stalin pointed out that the existing Waqf Act, 1995, has effectively safeguarded Waqf properties and does not require sweeping modifications.

Key concerns include:
🔹 Inclusion of Non-Muslims in Waqf Boards: The Bill mandates two non-Muslim members, which could compromise religious autonomy in managing Waqf properties.
🔹 Removal of ‘Waqf by User’ Clause: This threatens the status of many historical Waqf properties.
🔹 Restricting Donations: The amendment bars non-Muslims from donating Waqf properties unless they have practiced Islam for at least five years, affecting India’s syncretic culture.

Calling for PM Modi’s direct intervention, Stalin insisted that the Bill be withdrawn completely, as it could dilute the essence of the Waqf Act and negatively impact the Muslim community’s rights.
