Cooling Relief: BMTC Staff Serves Free Buttermilk to Beat the Heat
At BMTC’s Depot 21 in Rajajinagar, bus drivers, conductors, and even passengers find relief from the scorching sun with a refreshing glass of buttermilk. This thoughtful effort has been initiated by the depot staff.
“We introduced this initiative last year on a smaller scale, offering it only a few days a week. This time, we plan to continue throughout the summer,” shared a staff member with Metrolife.
Prepared with purified water, the buttermilk is made fresh daily, with around 25 liters served between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. The entire cost remains under ₹1,000 per day. “We have observed that many elderly individuals, especially those working near the depot, frequently stop by for a drink,” he added.
The project is entirely funded by the employees themselves. Occasionally, a staff member sponsors the whole day’s batch, marking a birthday or special occasion. Additional financial support sometimes comes through corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs.
A digital screen placed beside the serving counter proudly displays the name of the day’s sponsor, recognizing their contribution.
This simple yet impactful gesture not only provides hydration but also fosters a sense of community and care among those working in and around the depot.
