Bengaluru Police Block 16,219 SIM Cards and 15,000 Devices in Cybercrime Crackdown
Bengaluru City Police have significantly ramped up their efforts to combat cybercrime by utilizing the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal. In the past 10 months, they have blocked 16,219 SIM cards and 15,000 mobile phones involved in fraudulent activities.
The CEIR portal, a service provided by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), enables users to block lost or stolen phones using their IMEI numbers. It also aids in tracing those using blocked devices, making it a crucial tool in preventing cybercrime.
Additional Commissioner of Police (East) Raman Gupta highlighted the effectiveness of the portal, noting that it prevents fraudsters from operating and assists in their apprehension. The police have focused on blocking SIM cards and devices linked to recurrent cybercrimes, with ongoing efforts to also address VPN numbers.
Bengaluru is leading the charge in utilizing the CEIR portal to combat cyber offenses and manage lost mobile phones.
