Sreeparna Dutta, the wife of Bengaluru techie Vipin Gupta, who was recently reported missing and later traced to Noida, has been receiving distressing ransom threats from cybercriminals. Vipin Gupta, 37, a resident of Tata Nagar, disappeared on August 4. His wife filed a missing persons complaint on August 6 and appealed for help on social media. Despite his return, Dutta continues to receive fake kidnapping threats on WhatsApp.
In a statement to The Indian Express, Dutta revealed that the threats started after she sought assistance from NGOs to amplify her search for Vipin online. The police confirmed that these messages were from cybercriminals and advised her to ignore them. Speculations circulated online about Vipin fleeing due to alleged harassment, which Dutta strongly denies. She explained that her husband was dealing with a financial crisis, having been laid off twice, and had taken a pilgrimage to Tirupati before moving to Noida. Dutta refuted claims of mistreatment, emphasizing her efforts to find her husband through proper channels.
Dutta also mentioned receiving hate and abusive messages following her husband’s return, despite the public’s support during the search. Vipin is currently at a rehabilitation center.
