Karnataka BJP MLA Munirathna has been remanded in police custody for two days following his arrest near Mulbagal in Kolar district. The arrest comes after allegations of harassment, threats, and casteist slurs made against him by a BBMP contractor, Cheluvaraju.
Details of the Case:
- Allegations: Cheluvaraju claimed that Munirathna, the MLA for Rajarajeshwarinagar, demanded Rs 30 lakh in 2021 for a solid waste disposal contract. Despite paying Rs 20 lakh for 10 auto tippers, Cheluvaraju alleged that he was not permitted to execute the contract and was verbally abused and slapped by the MLA in September 2023.
- Evidence: Cheluvaraju released an audio recording in which Munirathna allegedly used abusive language and casteist slurs against a Dalit corporator. Munirathna has been booked under the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Police and Legal Proceedings:
- Arrest: Munirathna was apprehended while attempting to flee to Andhra Pradesh and was brought to Bengaluru. He was produced before a magistrate’s court, where the police sought a week of custody but were granted only two days.
- Defence: Munirathna denied the allegations, claiming they are part of a conspiracy. He asserted that the accusations are politically motivated, connected to his post-Lok Sabha election activities and complaints he made about financial irregularities in Devaraj Urs Truck Terminals Ltd. Munirathna alleged that the contractor, Cheluvaraju, is being used as part of a plot against him by political opponents.
